Waterford Regional Hospital Ophthalmic Consultant launches important
new publication
Mr. Stephen Beatty, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Waterford
Regional Hospital and Associate Lecturer at Waterford Institute of
Technology, has just published a book entitled "Nutrition and the
Eye: A practical approach". The book will be launched on April 6th
and is aimed at ophthalmologists, nutritionists, GPs, optometrists,
opticians and anyone involved in treating low vision.
This book, published by Elsevier, focuses on the importance of
nutrition and a balanced diet for maintenance of good vision and
prevention of eye diseases. Mr. Beatty leads a research time of five
at the Macular Pigment Laboratory at Waterford Institute of
Technology, which is looking into ways of preventing blindness in
the elderly by dietary modification and/or supplementation.
"Age related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness
in the world, and is going to become even more common because we are
living longer. There is a biologically plausible rationale why a
diet with high concentrations of certain nutrients might protect
against this devastating condition. Indeed, recent work just
published by the Macular Pigment Research Group in Waterford
Institute of Technology has shown that people at particular risk of
developing this condition are lacking in this important pigment
within the eye. The key message from the publication is that good
nutrition is essential for good vision, especially in the elderly,”
said Mr. Beatty.
“Nutrition and the Eye”, the book published by Mr. Beatty and Dr.
Frank Eperjesi has contributions from many world experts in the
field of nutrition and vision, including Professors Usha
Chakravarthy and Professor Ian Young of Queen’s University, Belfast.
There are also contributions from Mr. Beatty’s research team,
including those of Dr. Orla O’Donovan, Dr. Kumari Neelan, Dr. John
Nolan, and Dr. Al-Taie. "It has been a great experience to write
this book, as it represents an opportunity to publish current
thinking on the complex subject of nutrition and eye health, with
contributions from opinion leaders in the field from across the
world" said Mr. Beatty.
The book is available from all medical bookshops,
