Mumps Activity

Since late October 2004, 3 outbreaks have been reported to the National Disease Surveillance Centre, all have been associated with third level Institutions.  Approximately 110 people are affected in Dublin , the Midlands and the North West .

In the SEHB 2 non-linked cases have been identified (Carlow/Kilkenny area).

Where cases of Mumps have been identified, household contacts will be advised to attend their GP to assess vaccination status and be offered MMR vaccination where appropriate.

Updates on current levels of activity and questions and answers about Mumps will be available on the NDSC website shortly www.ndsc.ie.

Parents are recommended to get their children vaccinated with MMR vaccine.  The latest uptake information for MMR in the SEHB is showing an uptake of approximately 86%.  However the target figure is 95% uptake to prevent outbreaks and parents are advised to ensure that their children are vaccinated so that they have the maximum protection available.
