Junior
Certificate celebrations - health programme for secondary
schools in South Tipperary
29th August
2005
Every year sees
a rise in the misuse of alcohol and illegal substances amongst
young people in the South Tipperary area.
To combat and
deter the escalation this year the Education Sub Group in
partnership with the Substance Misuse Service of the Health
Service Executive South Eastern Region, Mid Tipperary Drugs
Initiative, Carrick Community Based Drugs Initiative, Clonmel
Community Based Drugs Initiative secondary schools in South
Tipperary the Gardai and other Community Based organisations
designed and developed a Substance Misuse Awareness programme
aimed at demoting the use of alcohol and illegal substances
amongst young people especially around the time of the Junior
Certificate celebrations.
This programme
has run annually since 2003 and is a collaborative effort
involving all the community including parents, the Garda,
Schools, Youth Services, Vintners, the media and any other
agency or organisation who wishes to be involved.
The programme
is developed during the summer and the aim of the programme is
to create a heightened awareness of the misuse of alcohol
especially around the time of the Junior Certificate results in
early September.
The programme
aims to
*
demote the use of alcohol and illegal substances by promoting
that adults and parents be more aware, assertive, around, awake
and available to young people at this significant time.
*
provide alternative activities to misusing alcohol or illegal
substances.
*
provide information packs to all licensed premises and vintners
in South Tipperary.
*
provide radio and media information
work with the
Garda Siochana in demoting the use of alcohol amongst young
people under the age of 18 years.
