new publication
Mr. Stephen Beatty, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Waterford
Regional Hospital and Associate Lecturer at Waterford Institute of
Technology, has just published a book entitled "Nutrition and the
Eye: A practical approach". The book will be launched on April 6th
and is aimed at ophthalmologists, nutritionists, GPs, optometrists,

Keep safe at Christmas
The Health Service Executive wishes service users, patients and
staff a happy and healthy Christmas. During the festive period,
staff will continue to provide essential health services to people
who need hospitals, ambulances and emergency placements. Head
office and central offices will be closed from Friday 23rd
and will reopen on Friday 30th December. Offices will be
closed on Monday 2nd January, for the New Year’s Day bank
holiday.

Waterford’s Public Health Nursing Service has achieved another first
The Public Health Nursing school service has achieved the ISO
9001:2000 accreditation award. The ISO is an international
organisation for standardisation and this award recognises an
initiative by staff to research, identify and record the best
practises, which facilitate the school screening service.

National Hygiene
Audit
The Health Service Executive in the South East welcomes the
publication of the first National Hygiene Audit for Irish
Hospitals. The HSE accepts the results as an accurate reflection of the level
of hygiene on the days that the audits were undertaken. It is very
disappointing that in some areas the results were below the
standards acceptable.

Ferns Inquiry Report
The
Health Service Executive welcomes the publication of the Ferns Inquiry
Report and is committed to implementing its recommendations. The HSE
co-operated in full with the inquiry and provided all information that
was requested, made all known files/documentation available, facilitated
staff who had to attend hearings and offered services to known victims

Springboard project for New Ross
The Health
Service Executive (Wexford Community Services) is signing a unique
agreement with Youth New Ross Ltd to set up a Springboard Project in New
Ross. This community project will run for three years and has a 1.2
million euro budget spread over that time.

Leptospirosis
- Are you at risk?
Leptospirosis is an infection frequently found in domestic and wild
animals. It is a zoonotic disease, which means that it can pass from
animals to humans, it rarely, if ever, passes from person to person.
In Ireland, leptospirosis is usually picked up from rats, although a
milder form can be caught from cattle or dogs. A number have occurred
in people working on farms/with animals, golfers and fishermen.

the launch of a new Drop in Psychology service for parents based in

of Bogus Staff

bogus worker who has visited at least two homes in the Wexford Town area
in the past month.
A woman , stating
that the Public
Health Nurse sent her, called to a person's home offering
assistance
with shopping etc. On another occasion the person was offering
Nursing Services to persons aged over 70yrs.

Crypotosporidiosis
The Health Service Executive South Eastern Area has advised Carlow
County Council to issue a boil water notice for the Carlow Town area.
This came about because of an increase in cases of human

BreastCheck roll-out to Carlow welcomed
The Health Service Executive South Eastern Area is delighted to
welcome the rollout of the national Breastcheck programme to Carlow.
The aim of the programme is the early detection and treatment of
breast cancer in women who show no symptoms of the disease.

Munch and Crunch success
The Munch & Crunch Healthy Lunch Project was initiated in 1999 in
County Waterford by the Health Service Executive South Eastern Area
(formerly SEHB). It aims to encourage and support primary schools in
developing and implementing a healthy lunch policy that is unique to
their school. There are now 217 (84%) schools in Counties Waterford,
Kilkenny and Wexford that are involved in this project.

Registration goes on-line in Waterford
The
end of an era was marked at
the South Eastern Health Board’s offices at The Cork Road in
Waterford
on Dec 6th 2004. On that day the book was closed on
the last manually written registers in use to record birth and death
for the districts of Tramore and Waterford.
These registers were started in January 1864 following an act
of Parliament which required the registering of
all deaths, births and marriages.

day at Grogan's road Wexford
A small piece of history was made in
the Health Board’s offices at Grogan’s Road in Wexford on
November 29th . On that day the registers of birth and
death ceased as the method of recording
key life events. These
registers were first opened in
January 1864 following an act of Parliament which required the

deaths, births and marriages.

Partnership approach to drugs
The South Eastern Health Board, Mid Tipperary Drugs Initiative and the
Slieveardagh Vintners Federation (SVF) have come together to develop a
drug and alcohol policy for vintners in the Slieveardagh area.
This is the first such programme to be developed in Ireland and
the partners hope that other vintners groups and community drug
initiatives will take it up across the country.
