Industrial Action at Waterford Regional Hospital

The SEHB is deeply concerned and disappointed that the Irish Medical Organisation has undertaken further industrial action today Tuesday 13th August, which is affecting 164 outpatients and 21 theatre procedures. The SEHB again calls on the IMO to withdraw the industrial action and prevent further suffering and distress to patients and their families.  The Board is available for talks at anytime with third party facilitators and retains its flexible approach to this dispute.

Three additional doctors have been employed in the Paediatric Department Waterford Regional Hospital to improve clinical services to patients while at the same time improving the training requirements of NCHDs and reducing the total hours worked per week by them as has been requested by the IMO for some time.  Each doctor now works between 58 and 64 hours per week, compared to an average of 68 to 85 hours prior to the new roster.

The new rosters have increased the numbers of hours worked by NCHDs between the hours of 9 – 5 from an average of 24 – 29 hours to a minimum of 32 hours per week.

The Board is again calling on the IMO to withdraw their action and refer the dispute to the Labour Relations Commission for meaningful talks.
