SEHB Staff Attend Critical Incident Stress Management Lecture

Over 50 managers in the South Eastern Health Board from General Hospitals, Community Care Services and the Special Hospitals attended a half-day lecture on Critical Incident Stress Management in Hotel Kilkenny on the 12th June 2002.

The lecture was given by Joyce McKee, Manager of Staff Care Services Northern Ireland. Edwina Dunne, Quality and Accreditation Manager with the South Eastern Health Board, who opened the event, emphasised the importance of the topic with regards to the Hospitals Accreditation Programme.

Ms McKee stressed the importance of detailed planning, practice with simulated situations and multidisciplinary working across Health Board services and sites in planning for the aftermath of critical incidents.She outlined experience gained from tragedies such as the Omagh bomb and the Dunblane shootings as well as smaller scale tragedies in the community.

The effects on Health Board staff of treating victims and their relatives were also discussed. Best practice for organisations that have staff working with crisis situations was outlined.
