Eastern Health Board Launches Report
The
Chairman of the South Eastern Health Board, Dr. Jack Gallagher
launched the Exercise Provision for Older Adults in Care Settings
Report on Wednesday 3rd July.
The Report is an evaluation of a training programme for staff and
older adults in care settings in the South Eastern Health Board region
and is the first such published in Ireland.
It was compiled by Dr. Niamh Murphy and Grainne Ni Lionain.

Due to Industrial Action at Waterford Regional Hospital
The
SEHB is deeply concerned and disappointed that the Irish Medical
Organisation has scheduled further industrial action for Wednesday
14th August.
Due to the ongoing industrial action by Non-Consultant
Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) at Waterford Regional Hospital it is
necessary and regrettable that non-emergency services will be
postponed up until and
including Friday, 16th August 2002. This situation
will be reviewed on a daily basis. Continue...

Industrial
Action at Waterford Regional Hospital
The
SEHB is deeply concerned and disappointed that the Irish Medical
Organisation has undertaken further industrial action today Tuesday
13th August, which is affecting 164 outpatients and 21
theatre procedures. The SEHB again calls on the IMO to withdraw the
industrial action and prevent further suffering and distress to
patients and their families.
The Board is available for talks at anytime with third party
facilitators and retains its flexible approach to this dispute.

Industrial
Action suspended at Waterford Regional Hospital
The
Irish Medical Organisation has notified the South Eastern Health
Board that it is suspending its industrial action from the hospital
with effect from 4.00 pm Friday 9th August until Tuesday
13th August at 9.00 am.
All
outpatient and surgery scheduled for Monday 12th August
2002 at Waterford Regional Hospital will now take place.

MRI Scanner Arrival
The new MRI Scanner was
delivered recently to Waterford Regional Hospital, generously funded
by the Waterford County and City Infirmary Trust in partnership with
the South Eastern Health Board. It is anticipated the Siemens Magnetom
Symphony MRI scanner will be operational following commissioning in

Recall
of BCG Vaccine
All health boards in Ireland, including the South Eastern Health
Board, have been notified by the Department of Health that a single
batch of BCG vaccine is being recalled from the Irish market due to
the possibility of reduced effectiveness. This is a precautionary
measure following tests which showed that one batch of the vaccine,
distributed in Ireland since late March 2002, was found to be less

Eastern Health Board warns of dangers of drinking unpasteurised milk
The
South East Regional Zoonosis Committee has called on farm families to
be aware of the risks posed by drinking unpasteurised milk.
The previously familiar disease risks, from unpasteurised milk, of
Tuberculosis and Brucellosis are increasingly being joined and over
shadowed by other risks such as Listeria, E Coli 0157, Salmonella,

A group of 16 nurses from the
Phillipines, who will shortly be taking up duty in hospitals in the
South East, arrived in Ireland at the weekend.The
nurses are part of a recruitment strategy to address the nursing

Eastern Health Board warns of increasing number of whooping cough
cases.
The
South Eastern Health Board has issued an alert about the worrying
incidence of the numbers of people with whooping cough in the region.
Parents have been urged to bring children who have not yet been
vaccinated to their local GP for vaccination. The vaccine is usually
administered in three doses when the child is two, four and six

Lukes Hospital Kilkenny.
Dr. Michael Conway a native of Limerick - has been appointed Consultant
Physician at St. Lukes Hospital, Kilkenny. Dr. Conway was an undergraduate at
Trinity College, Dublin and a postgraduate at Oxford University. He worked as a junior
doctor in Limerick and went on to train in cardiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital and
the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford.
He has also worked as a lecturer and clinical investigator in the Department

Hepatitis A
There have been a number of cases of Hepatitis A in the Tipperary Town area
reported to the South Eastern Health Board. Hepatitis A is an infectious disease that
is spread easily through person to person contact due to infected faeces or urine. In
children and adults the symptoms include a flu-like illness and gastro-intestinal
