County Wexford Schools Implement Healthy Lunch
Policies.
A
number of primary schools in County Wexford have been presented with
certificates for developing and implementing healthy lunch policies. Representatives
from each of the 103 primary schools, along with members of the National
Parents Council County Executive, were invited to an Information Evening
on the 29th May 2002, where they were presented with their
certificates. The
certificates were presented as part of the Munch & Crunch Healthy
Lunch Project. A total of 85
schools are participating in this project, including more than 80% of
primary schools in Co. Wexford. The
project encourages schools to develop policies which promote school
lunches that include fruit and /or vegetables and dairy products but are
low in fat and sugar. Representatives
of 30 schools were presented with certificates by Con Pierce, General
Manager, Wexford Community Care. Dr.
Ann Marie Tully, Dietitian with National Dairy Council, spoke on healthy
eating for children. The evening was organised by the Health Promotion Department, South Eastern Health Board, in conjunction with the National Dairy Council. This is the first time such an information evening has been held in Co. Wexford, said Susan Higgins, Dietician Manager Community, South Eastern Health Board. It ties in with National Healthy Eating Week (26 May- 1 June) which this year is promoting More Fruit and Veg Everyday. We hope that teachers and principals will find it beneficial when it comes to passing on information to children about healthy eating.
