National Healthy Eating Week
kicks off in the South East
People
in the South East are being urged to focus on the importance of fruit
& veg as part of a varied, healthy daily eating plan, to coincide
with National Healthy Eating Week, which is taking place from Sunday, 26th
May to Saturday, 1st June 2002.
This
years campaign will aim to encourage consumers to increase their
consumption of fruit and vegetables, on a daily basis. Whilst
it is recommended that we eat four or more portions of fruit and/or
vegetables each day, the 2002 campaign goal is the additional
consumption of just one more portion of either, every day.
Fresh,
frozen or tinned
eating the recommended daily allowance of fruit and
vegetables will be the key message throughout the campaign, said
Susan Higgins, Dietician Manager Community with the South Eastern Health
Board.
Fruit and vegetables are good for body shape and for a healthy
heart.
They are the quick and convenient way of providing the body with
essential vitamins and minerals, are high in fibre, rich in A, C and B
group vitamins and almost fat free. It
is hoped that by encouraging a reduction of fat intake, the level of fat
intake will be no more than 35% of energy as fat by the year 2005, and a
better balance between the different types of fat will be achieved. Eating
more fruit and vegetables - especially as snack foods to replace high fat
treats - will help achieve this goal, Susan Higgins added. The
other objective of the National Healthy Eating Campaign is to help avoid
increases in body weight.
Eating more fruit and vegetables, together with regular physical
activity, will also help achieve this aim.
