| South
Eastern Health Board Launches Report
The
Chairman of the South Eastern Health Board, Dr. Jack Gallagher
launched the Exercise Provision for Older Adults in Care Settings
Report on Wednesday 3rd July.
The
Report is an evaluation of a training programme for staff and older
adults in care settings in the South Eastern Health Board region and
is the first such published in Ireland.
It
was compiled by Dr. Niamh Murphy and Grainne Ni Lionain from the
Centre for Health Behaviour Research, School of Humanities,
Waterford Institute of Technology.
This
collaborative research by the Health Promotion Department of the
South Eastern Health Board and the Health Behaviour Research Group
at Waterford Institute of Technology began in 1999 when the South
Eastern Health Board co-funded the project with the Health Research
Board. The funding facilitated access to further grant monies by the
Research Group at Waterford Institute of Technology to expand the
pilot programme to other care settings in the South Eastern Health
Board.
The
outcome of the project was that structured exercise programmes were
developed and delivered by staff as part of the ongoing care
provision.
The
results of the project demonstrated that these programmes can bestow
substantial physical and psychological benefits for older people in
care settings, said John Magner. Of course it can also be
great fun for the older person and rewarding to the staff
involved.
Dr.
Gallagher said the South Eastern Health Board was delighted to be
leading the way in this field and is committed to further developing
the initiative. He thanked the project team at the Health Behaviour
Research Centre at Waterford Institute of Technology for their
leadership of this initiative. He also thanked the staff and
patients of the care settings involved in the project for their
continued hard work and enthusiasm.
The
project is the first phase of a longer term project to ensure
exercise is available to all older persons residing in the care
settings in the South East.
He
added that collaboration with Waterford Institute of Technology
would continue with a view to developing a nationally co-ordinated
response to improving activity provision for the dependent older
person.
The
report was launched in Waterford on Wednesday, 3rd July
2002.
