Honour for Waterford Regional Hospital Consultant

2nd June 2005

Mr Stephen Beatty, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Waterford Regional Hospital, has been appointed to the Board of Governors at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). The appointment was approved by the Minister of Education, Mary Hanafin, in May of this year and is the first time a consultant has been appointed to the Board of Governors of WIT. The appointment was in recognition of the research and teaching undertaken by Mr. Beatty at WIT.

Mr Beatty has been involved in research and education in WIT since his arrival in
Waterford in 2001, and together with Dr Orla O'Donovan, is supervising three PhD-driven projects at the institute which are investigating ways of preventing age-related macular degeneration, which is the commonest cause of blindness in the Western World. Indeed, one of these PhD candidates, John Nolan, has recently been awarded the Fulbright Scholarship in
recognition of the on-going research.

Mr Beatty has expressed delight with this appointment, saying "It is a very exciting time to join the Board of Governors at WIT, given the positive changes that have occurred in the institute over the last few years, especially in the research sector. The dynamism of WITs academic, executive and administrative staff will, I believe, ensure further positive change in the future".'
