BreastCheck roll-out to Carlow welcomed

The Health Service Executive South Eastern Area is delighted to welcome the rollout of the national Breastcheck programme to Carlow. The aim of the programme is the early detection and treatment of breast cancer in women who show no symptoms of the disease. BreastCheck provides free breast x-rays (mammograms) to women aged 50-64 to detect early cancer. The programme began screening women in the South Eastern Area in 2003 with the establishment of the BreastCheck service in Wexford.

The BreastCheck clinic will be located in St. Dympna’s Hospital, Carlow and it is expected to welcome the first Carlow women in early April. Under the extension of the programme, approximately 3,000 Carlow women in the target population 50 to 64 years of age will be eligible for screening.

Peter Finnegan, Chief Office, South Eastern Area said: “I am delighted that the Breastcheck programme is starting in Carlow. I would urge all women who are invited to attend to take up the offer. It is important that women attend the screening as early signs of breast cancer can be identified and treatment started at an early stage - this improves the outcomes for women who contract breast cancer.”

The first invitations to attend the service will be issued by BreastCheck in the coming weeks. To check if your name is on the list or to register to be included on the list please contact BreastCheck on Freephone 1800 454545.
