New
Partnership approach to drugs
19th
October 2004
The
South Eastern Health Board, Mid Tipperary Drugs Initiative and the
Slieveardagh Vintners Federation (SVF) have come together to develop
a drug and alcohol policy for vintners in the Slieveardagh area.
This is the first such programme to be developed in Ireland
and the partners hope that other vintners groups and community drug
initiatives will take it up across the country.
The Alcohol and Drug Awareness Policy is being launched in
Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary on Tuesday 19th October.
The
programme includes a training element (four sessions) to give advice
and information in relation to the law, illegal drug use, underage
drinking and a policy document.
The Alcohol and Drug Awareness policy was developed following
the training programme. The
policy contains sections on:
Dealing
with underage drinking
Responsible
serving
Managing
a drug related incident
Education
Drug
Facts
Emergency
Procedures
Drugs
and the law
Johnny
Casey, SEHB Substance Misuse Co-ordinator for South Tipperary
recognised the importance of working with the vintners, “We were
delighted to work with the Mid Tipperary Drugs initiative, a
community drugs programme, and the vintners to develop this
programme. One of the
key elements of the National Drugs Strategy is Education and
Prevention. This
programme supports the strategy by providing clear guidelines to
vintners and bar staff who are often at the coal face of dealing
with substance misuse.”
SVF Chairperson
Michael McCormack says, “This Substance Misuse Policy document
outlines a framework to address issues which affect S.V.F
(publicans) ability to effectively manage and maintain their
business premises within the goals and objectives highlighted
within. These issues are specific to publicans however they also
relate to current social and economic issues affecting the
Slieveardagh area and the wider community. I welcome this policy and
I hope that it will help vintners and bar staff in dealing with drug
and substance misuse.”
